Is My iPhone Unlocked or Locked? How To Know?

Purchased your iPhone recently, most likely it’s already unlocked. If you have had your phone for a while or are looking to purchase a used one, you may want to check and see if it’s locked to a certain carrier. Is My iPhone Unlocked or Locked?

Carriers lock devices:

They only work on that specific carrier to ensure that you can not get a discounted phone with one of their plans. And then jump to another carrier leaving them with the bill.

Purchasing a used mobile phone, it is best to check and see if it is locked. Before you do so, you can use it on the carrier of your choice. Having an unlocked iPhone is also good. You can switch carriers if you’d like, or if you need to travel outside the country and purchase a sim card to use while there.

Is My iPhone Unlocked?

To check if your iPhone is unlocked, there are 2 basic ways to do so.

Method one:

Check using the phone’s settings.

  • · Go to settings.
  • · Click the cellular option
  • · If you see the cellular data option listed there, your phone is unlocked.

In case, you don’t see the option, then most likely your phone is locked by your carrier.

This method is quick and easy but does require that you have access to the phone in question. It is also not 100% accurate.

So, we can go for method 2, just to be sure.

Method 2:

This method is a little bit more involved but it leaves no doubt once you are done. To check using this method, you’ll need 2 SIM cards for your iPhone from 2 different networks.

  • · Power down your iPhone first
  • · Then open the SIM card slot on your phone using a removal tool or a paperclip.
  • · Remove our sim card and replace it with one from another carrier.
  • · turn the Power phone back up.
  • · You’ll notice that the carrier’s name will change at the top of your phone.
  • · Try to make a call

The call goes through, then your phone is unlocked. But if you can not place a call, then it is locked by your carrier. You may also get a message alerting you that the phone is locked.

What if your iPhone is locked?

If your phone is locked, there is no need to worry. As long as your phone is no longer under contract or you have paid for it outright, you can have it unlocked by the carrier. They are required to do so by the FCC.

Also, if you are the original owner of the phone, this is as simple as a phone call or entering a code. In any case, if you are buying a second-hand phone or did not know who the original owner is, this can be a bit trickier. It is still doable, but you may have a jump through a few more hoops.

I hope that helps you to figure out if your phone is unlocked. You can also follow Apple’s Forum to know more.
